Material Ecology is an emerging interdisciplinary field in design computation denoting informed relations between material systems and their environment in form-generation and digital fabrication processes. Enhancing the integration between geometry, structure and material, such processes relate to material-based design computation and performance-based digital fabrication.
Defined as the study and design of products and processes integrating environmentally aware computational form-generation processes and digital fabrication, the field operates at the intersection of biology, materials science, engineering, and computer science with emphasis on environmentally
informed digital design and fabrication.
With the advent of digital fabrication techniques and technologies in design, material voxels can be used to represent material constituents, for instance in the context of additive manufacturing processes and digital fabrication in general. The ability to design, analyze and fabricate using a single material
unit implies unity between physical and digital matter, enabling seamless mappings between environmental constraints and material organization. Such unity may promote a truly ecological design paradigm, facilitating form generation guided and informed by environmental constraints.
Motivated by demonstrating the broad interdisciplinary range of the Material Ecology approach to integrated models of design computation, the issue will propose a digital material approach in design and fabrication. We seek studies on, and contributions to, ecological material-based approaches in digital design and fabrication. Relevant fields include related design fields in architectural and engineering design, Biomimetics, mechanical design, product design and others. Researchers and experts from academia, practice and industry are invited to share their original work by submitting research and application papers for this issue. The objective is to define and discusses the contribution of this interdisciplinary emerging design paradigm; distribute recent insights and findings; to make the latest results of development known for the CAD/E community; and to stimulate further research in the multi-disciplinary research domain.

* Novel shape-material models
* Software environments supporting material-based, digital form finding
* Environmentally-informed fabrication platforms
* Material ecology issues in additive manufacturing
* Biologically inspired shape-material designs
* Biologically inspired digital fabrication
* Applications of material ecology in industrial design and architecture
* Material-based design computation

accepted, or will be submitted to any other conference or journal. 2. POSITION: Lecturer in Digital Architecture – Kent School of Architecture, UK
We are looking to recruit a talented individual who is able to formulate a curriculum for the teaching of AutoCAD and REVIT/BIM to our undergraduate students. As soon as possible, we want to work with someone who will enthuse the students in the use of the programmes, and who can deliver learning
programmes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd years to prepare them for practice, and to enable us to advance screen based imagery as the main presentation mode in the school. We are looking for someone to work part-time immediately.
Lecturer in Digital Architecture soon
In the next few months we want to recruit to a full-time post for a lecturer in digital architecture. This person would work with us to develop a syllabus for computer teaching over 5 years of study. He/she would be familiar with trends in computing and representation, and be a highly capable practitioner (s above.) The successful applicant would advise on future developments in architectural computing to place KSA as the UK school most committed to
digital architecture and advanced computer studies in architecture. We would encourage this individual to take on their own programme of research in the field of digital architecture. They would be talented practitioners in their own right.
